The woman said no, but it didn’t matter: She was still fired.

Khazan’s main argument is that many Americans feel the need to be superhuman workers who never take time off. But why? 

And more importantly, why are we okay with that? Perhaps it’s because this is what we’ve seen modeled by our parents and in our communities. 

The author cites a study done by psychologist Merry Bear where participants were asked what they thought were the most admirable character traits. 

They found that “hardworking” came at the top of the list, and nearly two-thirds of people felt that this was an admirable trait.
